It is important to know that everybody goes through their difficulties, it is a normal part of life. The question is, when does the normal ups and downs become something more. Symptoms will vary from person to person and the better you know an individual the easier it is to recognize the signs.
Signs of depression
Not everyone will have the same symptoms of having depression. Here are some general symptoms that are common among people who are depressed.
It’s also important to know that some of the symptom’s teenagers experience are different than those common among adults.
- Feelings of hopelessness and/or helplessness: Having a poor outlook in general. Nothing will get better, life is horrible, and nothing is going to change…
- Appetite or weight losses or gains: Losing or gaining more than 5% of total body weight is concerning and should be considered along with other coinciding symptoms.
- Loss of interest in daily activities: This can be different for everyone. Losing interest in maintaining friendships, no interest in hobbies, loss of interest in sex, and the inability to take pleasure in any activities.
- Loss or low energy levels: People who are depressed usually have very low energy levels and often sleep far more than they normally are accustomed to. Small tasks can seem exhausting and may take longer to complete.
- Sleep changes: Often people who are depressed will sleep for very long periods, but that can go the other way as well. Some people who are depressed may find getting to sleep and staying asleep very difficult.
- Anger or irritability: Feeling agitated and having a quick temper with little tolerance of others and can, but not always, lead to physical violence.
- Self-hatred: People with depression often feel extreme anger towards themselves even for things beyond their control. Some are vocal about it and others rage silently. If untreated it can turn destructive and some acting out can come in the form of self-mutilation.
- Reckless behavior: Often depressed people engage in dangerous behavior to take themselves out of the feelings or change how they are feeling. This could be in the form of reckless driving, compulsive gambling, unprotected sex, dangerous sports, or other activities.
- Difficulty concentrating: This can come in the form of difficulty completing tasks or making important, or even relatively simple decisions.
- Unexplained aches and pains: Increase of physical aches and pains like headaches, stomach problems and pain, as well as back pain are all common.
Suffering in Silence
People who are depressed often suffer in silence. The better you know someone the easier it will be to see if they are having symptoms of depression.
The signs and symptoms and the severity of them can be complex and difficult to understand.
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to get help, the sooner the better. Depression is very treatable with both medication and the right therapy.
